The easiest and most efficient foundation for dressing wounds goes as follows:

  • CLEANSING:

Using anything such as saline or other types of solution to clean

the wound and get it ready for treatment. That way it is safe and stable to handle when dressing the wound.

  • DEBRIDEMENT:

Removing and getting rid of any dead tissue or bioburden that

can possibly reinfect the wound even after treating it. This is important because without doing this, you won’t be able to dress it effectively and the patient could face post-infection due to that.

  • DRESSING/DRESSING SELECTION:

Using the right wound dressing/packaging is just as important as the other two foundations. Using the wrong wound dressing could lead to an ineffective wound treatment. There are such things as primary and secondary dressings which play different roles. Primary dressings go directly into the wound, keeping it from leaking and protecting it from external contamination. Secondary dressings go right on top of the primary dressing to keep it stable and intact.

Importance of compression

One of the most important things to keep in mind when having to treat a wound is compression. If you don’t have the necessary equipment/resources to use to treat a wound effectively, then putting direct pressure and compression is the best way to suppress a wound until you seek medical attention. This can save a life because stopping the bleed is the most important factor between life or death.
